Wind does so much roof damage in Utah because canyon winds funnel downward and accelerate as they reach the benches, hitting roofs with force that open ground never sees. The damage is rarely dramatic. Wind breaks the adhesive seal strip that bonds each shingle to the one below it, and once that bond is gone, every gust afterwards gets underneath and levers the shingle further. A roof in that condition looks completely normal from the street and fails in the next serious storm.

A roof should be checked for wind damage after any windstorm, and particularly along the benches and canyon mouths from Bountiful through Farmington, Spanish Fork and Uintah. Shingles in the yard are the obvious sign. Creased shingles still on the roof are the common one, and they are already failed.
